The meeting was called to order at 11:30 a.m. by President Tim Mahoney.
President Mahoney welcomed members, new attendees, old friends, and colleagues and explained that the agenda for the day would be the regular NETCO business meeting, followed by remarks from declared candidates for office. The proposed agenda was accepted without amendment.
The notes of the previous meeting were approved as submitted.
Travis County Democratic Party Chair Katie Naranjo was introduced and expressed her appreciation for the club.
Travis County Precinct 1 Commissioner Jeff Travillion talked about his upcoming re-election effort as well as the $1.6 billion dollar Travis County bond that will be on the election to provide road and pedestrian improvements and park improvements. He said the bond would be tax neutral.
President Mahoney announced that NETCO is working with the TCDP to support area super precincts. He said the plan included recruiting more precinct chairs, providing training on the VAN system year-round and being cohesive and connected all the time, not just at election time.
Guest speaker Nancy Thompson, founder of Mothers Against Greg Abbott (MAGA) talked about forming the organization in response to Republican positions and policies that hurt children, such as opposition to mask mandates during the pandemic and other issues. She said the group has more than 62,000 Facebook members and has chapters in other states. Donations come from across the country and abroad.
She talked about the importance of recruiting youth into political organizations, filling precinct chair vacancies, increasing members, donating to the party and receiving training to become volunteer deputy registrars.
Nancy said that the organization is going through a rebranding and the new name will be “Mothers for Democracy.”
Ross Pumphrey and Caro DuBois gave a presentation on the TCDP Super Precincts. They said that for the 290 precincts in Travis County, there were only 181 precinct chairs. Ross discussed the work that is underway to organize the 12 precincts in Windsor Park area into a Super Precinct.
Caro also announced the BlueBlvd Super Precinct “Picnic in the Park” October 1st from 4 to 6 p.m. at Walnut Creek Park. (see announcement at netcodems.com/news)
